FED:Hunger strike starts on Christmas Island
PERTH, April 27 AAP - A group of asylum seekers on Christmas Island has gone on hunger
strike as other detainees continue a rooftop protest at the island's main detention centre.
An unspecified number of detainees at the island's lower-security Phosphate Hill facility
had advised they were engaging in "voluntary starvation", an Immigration Department spokesman
told AAP on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, eight detainees at the island's Northwest Point secure facility staged
a rooftop protest, holding up a banner saying "Please Help Us".
Their protest coincided with a visit to the centre by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott
and his immigration and border security spokesmen Scott Morrison and Michael Keenan.
The rooftop protest continued on Wednesday, with six detainees on the roof, the immigration
spokesman said.
He said staff at the centre's privately contracted operator Serco continued to engage
with the men to encourage them to come down.
"It is important to note that protest action such as this does not alter the outcome
of asylum claims or any other aspect of detention or processing," the spokesman said.
The Christmas Island detention centre was the scene of mass break-outs and riots in
March, when accommodation tents were burnt down and federal police used teargas and beanbag
bullets to quell rock-throwing rioters.
Since then there have been a series of protests and disturbances at mainland detention
centres, including riots at the Villawood centre in Sydney last week in which many buildings
burnt down.
Three detainees at Villawood, an Iranian and two Kurds, were maintaining a rooftop
protest on Wednesday.
Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has called for them to be removed from the roof
by authorities.
Meanwhile, a four-day peaceful protest by mainly Afghan detainees at the Curtin Immigration
Detention Centre in Western Australia's Kimberley region ended on Tuesday.
Twelve detainees at the centre had indicated they were on "voluntary starvation" but
an immigration spokesman said only two had advised on Wednesday they were continuing their
action.
On Tuesday, Immigration Minister Chris Bowen announced the government would toughen
laws to deter violent behaviour at detention centres.
The proposed changes would mean anyone convicted of criminal conduct while in immigration
detention would automatically be denied a protection visa under character-test rules.

FED:Australian Egyptians celebrate
By Vincent Morello and Matthew Sadler
SYDNEY, Feb 12 AAP - Australia's Egyptian community is jubilant over President Hosni
Mubarak's resignation after almost three straight weeks of mass demonstrations in Cairo.
Immigrant Egyptians living in state capitals across the country have rallied to celebrate
the triumph of "people power" in their former homeland.
Pro-democracy demonstrators had risked all in order to undermine the 30-year Mubarak
regime overwhelmingly condemned as oppressive and totalitarian.
And on Saturday, hundreds of Australian Egyptians gathered in Sydney, Melbourne and
Brisbane to celebrate the news overnight that Mubarak was finally stepping down.
Nour Eldin Tarraf, from the Sydney Egyptian Revolution Solidarity Committee, fought
back tears as he praised Egypt's young professionals who sparked the protest movement,.
"On the 25th of January, the internet generation, our generation, said 'enough'," Mr
Tarraf told supporters at a Sydney Town Hall rally.
"Egyptians took to the streets from all walks of life - men, women, Muslims and Christians,
old and young, rich and poor.
"All of them hand in hand, wanting their freedom. They wanted their dignity back. The
Egyptian people led by the youth."
Perihan Salam said Egyptians had been "unfree" only a day ago.
"But today, I am more than honoured across seas and oceans, across lands and skies,
to reach out my hand and ask you to hold mine," Ms Salam told the crowd.
"I shake hands with you as free and full of hope in the name of God."
Clair Mallinson, Amnesty International Australia's national director, called on Egypt's
interim leaders to end torture and discrimination and support the basic rights of all
citizens.
Around 500 people attended a similar rally in Melbourne.
One tweeter on the social networking website Twitter said: "Lizzy said fantastic turnout
in Melbourne for standing in solidarity with Egypt."
Another tweeter wrote: "In solidarity, Melbourne stands with the people of Egypt."
A joint statement on Saturday by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Foreign Minister
Kevin Rudd said fundamental reform was needed to "ensure the opportunity and freedoms
that ordinary Egyptians have been calling for".
"Australia calls for constitutional reform and a clear timetable towards free and fair
elections and a representative civilian government that ordinary Egyptians have been calling
for," the statement said.
But Mr Rudd told ABC Radio many questions confront the Egyptian people and also the
international community.
"The first of those questions is the precise role of the military council now in paving
the way towards democratic elections," he said.
"Furthermore, what is the continuing role of the interim cabinet appointed by then-president
Mubarak and vice-president Suleiman?
"Thirdly, will there be a new interim government appointed for the purposes of making
revisions to the Egyptian constitution to hold the elections?
"And fourthly, what would be the timetable for such elections?"
Mr Rudd said the process towards democracy and the holding of free and fair elections
"must be made clear as soon as possible".
"The process must be agreed upon peacefully and the preparations must be in accordance
with the proper process."
Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop echoed Labor's sentiments in a statement on Saturday.
"It is important that steps are taken quickly to ensure free and fair elections are
held as soon as possible," the statement said.

QLD:Qld caucus to debate hung parliament
BRISBANE, Aug 29 AAP - Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and her colleagues will debate
what led to the unprecedented position of a hung federal parliament at a Labor state caucus
meeting on Monday.
Ms Bligh told reporters on Sunday her team would use the meeting to talk about issues
affecting not only Queensland but all of Australia.
"We are in a an unprecedented position where we don't have a federal government," she said.
"Like other Australians, my caucus and I will be debating the circumstances that led
to that extraordinary situation.
"There are some messages there for us at state level, and I want to hear from my own
caucus members."
Ms Bligh's comments come just days after Treasurer Andrew Fraser said he feared Labor
would lose a state election were one held now.
Opposition leader John-Paul Langbroek on Sunday said if the caucus meeting concluded
with privatisation of the state's assets still on the agenda and Ms Bligh still as premier,
it was proof Labor still "didn't get it".
Mr Langbroek said the caucus meeting would also test the resolve of backbench Labor
MPs who wanted to have Ms Bligh's privatisation agenda reconsidered.
"If they have now really changed their minds and if they now really agree with the
LNP's policy to oppose this sale, then we need to see some action from them," he said.

Qld: Minister appeals for fair go for cyclone victims
By Nikki Todd
BRISBANE, April 10 AAP - Queensland's fair trading minister is calling on tradesmen
and landlords to spare a thought for the victims of Cyclone Larry and not take advantage
of them.
Builders from as far away as Sydney and Melbourne are reportedly demanding up to three
times the going rate to help in the reconstruction of cyclone-devastated parts of far
north Queensland.
House rents have also jumped as people are forced to compete for the limited remaining
accommodation in Innisfail and surrounding areas.
Fair Trading Minister Margaret Keech said the government was not in a position to set
prices but called on tradesmen and landlords to be mindful of the difficulties victims
are experiencing.
"Tradespeople are looking to be paid for their services but I would encourage them
to take into consideration that it is a national disaster, it is an emergency, and to
set their prices accordingly," Ms Keech said.
"I would be encouraging them to be considerate of the difficulties, particularly where
I saw some of the houses that have been completely destroyed.
"It is up to the individual tradespeople to be charging a fair price rather than a
price that is outrageous."
Ms Keech admitted tradesmen were in short supply and it was up to the individual to
decide what to pay for services.
She said complaints of profiteering had been investigated by the Department of Fair
Trading but only one had enough supporting information to be pursued.
The minister encouraged anybody with a complaint to contact her department.
This is the second warning issued by Ms Keech, who first raised concerns about profiteering
more than two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Premier Peter Beattie today accepted donations for his cyclone appeal fund
from the Chinese and Muslim communities, as well as from Macquarie Bank and Qld Tissue.
More than 50,500 donations amounting to almost $14.5 million have been donated to the
appeal since it was established after the March 20 cyclone.

Birdstep Signs Technology Agreement with iPass.
Business Editors & High-Tech Writers
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 2002
Birdstep Technology Inc. today announced that it will provide support for the emerging Generic Interface Specification (GIS) proposed by iPass.
Birdstep's IP Zone wireless access software will now be GIS-ready, enabling mobile operators to easily join the iPass network and offer high-speed, secure access to corporate users.
GIS is an open-standard protocol that allows access gateway vendors and wireless ISPs to authenticate and grant access from an 802.11-enabled device, such as a laptop or PDA, over many disparate Wi-Fi networks.
"With support from access gateway vendors such as Birdstep, we are gaining traction for an industry-standard access protocol," said Anurag Lal, vice president, business development for iPass. "Mobile operators deploying Birdstep's IP Zone software will have GIS functionality built-in and therefore, can easily add their Wi-Fi hot spots to the iPass network."
As part of its Global Broadband Roaming service, iPass has been aggregating hot spot locations both in the United States and internationally and has more than 400 wireless hot spots worldwide. iPass allows mobile operators to provide enterprise customers with secure, high-speed wireless access to business-critical applications from any location.
Based on the 802.11 standard, Wi-Fi (or WLAN) is a wireless broadband solution that scales from small locations, such as homes or coffee shops, to very large public areas, such as airports and convention centers. According to market research firm In-Stat/MDR, the number of wireless hot spots in the U.S. alone will soar from less than 2,000 locations in 2001 to more than 41,000 in 2006.
"Birdstep is proud to join the movement to create a single standard protocol," said Hans-Arne L'orange, chief executive officer for Birdstep Technology. "We believe that GIS will accelerate the adoption cycle for Wi-Fi access by satisfying the growing need to roam between disparate networks."
Birdstep's IP Zone software is a platform-independent family of products for implementing and administering wireless zones or hot spots. Designed for public or enterprise wireless access areas, IP Zone Server software provides cross platform authentication so that users can access the Internet and network applications.
IP Zone software also offers billing and content management for mobile operators and enterprise customers. It enables site owners and service providers to offer free or pay-per-minute Internet access and content, creating a viable revenue stream.
As part of this agreement, Birdstep has made its Intelligent Mobile IP technology interoperable with iPassConnect(TM) client. Birdstep's Mobile IP client enables users and applications to move seamlessly across different types of infrastructures, such as WLAN, LAN, GPRS, GSM, CDMA2000, Bluetooth and others, without interrupting the connection or causing application downtime.
About Birdstep Technology
Birdstep Technology was founded in Oslo, Norway in 1996 and is traded on the Oslo Stock Exchange (OSE) under ticker "BIRD." The company has approximately 80 employees in Oslo and Seattle. Birdstep's small footprint, high performance database technologies combined with its wireless roaming and access software enables companies to build innovative solutions for embedded systems and the Mobile Internet. Consumers: He was promoted from senior analyst to lead the first of the new initiatives. TowerGroup e-Banking provides research and advice to retail banks and consumer credit companies. Later this year, the firm will launch similar services for online brokerage, insurance and wholesale banking.
Focus: Bell looks at Internet and like technology's impact on the banking business, IT systems and vendors, and electronic bill payment and presentment. The latter, he says, "will define where e-banking is going. EBPP is one of the big things that the Internet is all about."
Challenge: "The rules are changing in such a profound way that banks risk the very fundamentals of their business propositions," Bell says. "On EBPP, they can't afford to lose, because they'd lose the last exclusive factor they have-access to the payment system. Institutions need to come to grips with some realities that I think they've been reluctant to face."
E Background: Bell, who calls his age "on the high side of 50," is a banking software expert with a wide variety of experience, including running his own software firm. He has developed branch automation and loan origination systems, and he says, "I was involved in a lot of the early development of Internet applications at an excruciatingly detailed level."

Drugs were packed in oranges.

A gang of five men smuggled more than 20 kilogrammes of heroin into the UAE hidden in crates of oranges, a Dubai court heard yesterday. The quintet - a Pakistani and four Nigerians - were caught in May after police received information about the operation allegedly taking place at Al Awir fruit market."We opened a container and found boxes full of oranges. We opened them and found small amount of drugs in each that were hidden in a professional way," a police officer said in the court records. Police knew the crate belonged to the Pakistani and arrested him immediately.
During questioning he claimed he was just a middleman, acting between the four Nigerians and drug producers in Pakistan."He told us someone in Pakistan had contacted him and asked to send him fruit containers which contain drugs. His part was to make sure that the container entered the UAE and after that he was supposed to give it to the other four suspects to sell it," the police officer said. The four Nigerians were captured when they arrived to pick up their next consignment of drugs - 101 boxes containing 400 small bags of heroin. All the suspects denied smuggling and dealing drugs and the judge adjourned the trial until next month.
